Year 2

Welcome back! I hope you have all had a fabulous Easter. I look forward to another half term with the children. Let the sunshine continue...

Summer 1 topic: Beachcombers

Oh I do like to be by the seaside! Do you? That's good because you're about to become an expert beachcomber!

Head to your nearest beach to look for interesting and unusual objects, using your senses to spot, sniff and seek them out.

Have you seen the rock pools yet? We can take a peek into the cool water to learn about weird and wonderful animals and plants in their microhabitats.

Maybe we can kick back in a deckchair and do a little reading... What's your favourite book about the seashore?

Got your shorts and sunglasses on? Bucket and spade at the ready? Splish Splash! Let's get beachcombing!

Year 2 have been working through different stages these past two weeks to create a slow motion animation. They chose a minibeast they wanted to show the life cycle of. The children then created each stage in the life cycle out of clay. Once this was dry, the children could paint the minibeasts along with creating a background. This was used out of egg boxes. Year 2 hope these animations will help others to learn about the minibeast and their life cycle. Later this week, year 2 will be showing Reception and sharing other fantastic facts and work they have completed throughout this topic. Great work Year 2! 10 house points each!

Spring 2 Pick and Mix

Welcome back Spring 2

Grab your coat and pooter - we're going out and about on a minibeast hunt! Sweep your nets in puddles and ponds and lift up logs to see who's home. We will be collecting minibeasts all sizes and shapes, adding notes and labels and asking questions - just like a real entomologist!

Year 2 will be learning about bees, worms and butterflies. Looking into their life cycles and what food they eat. We will be carrying out investigations to find out more, like how far a snail travels in a day.

It will lead the children to create an animation to show how your favourite bug transforms from one form to another, perhaps a caterpillar to butterfly or a maggot to a fly!

On your belly, legs at the ready, it's time to WRIGGLE AND CRAWL!

School visit: This half term we are joining forces with Reception class to discover all the weird and wonderful mini-beasts on the school grounds. We have invited Wriggly Roadshow to come in on the afternoon of Thursday 28th February. Please have your child's permission slip and payment in by Tuesday 26th February.

About Wriggly Roadshow... They are a fun, experienced animal handling company based in Manchester. They will bring wonderful insects and other animals into school. They will provide the children with a fun and educational workshop and getting up close and personal with these amazing creatures! Check out their website on: https://www.wrigglyroadshow.com/

A follow up of pictures will be uploaded on the website to share with your this great experience! My door will be open to any questions or queries about this visit. Thank you.

School Hunt 4.2.2019

Happy new year to you all!

Thank you so much for your kind gifts and lovely cards. The children had a fantastic finish to the end of a long half term. I hope you all enjoyed your holidays and are all ready for a new term.

Spring 1 Half term

LAND AHOY!

Get your sea legs on, it's time to sail the salty seas. Navigate, investigate and explore the world - just like Captain Cook. We will be discovering famous sea explorers such as Grace Darling and sing along to sea shanties as we row our boats across the stormy seas with swords flying high, just like the famous pirates. We are going to be just as determined as Pirate Blackbeard in our learning this half term. Thar's land ahead, me buckos! Let's get t'ship t'port and be ready to learn.

P.E days are Monday and Tuesday afternoons.

Children's reading books will be changed Mondays and Thursdays. Library books will be changed either the Wednesday or Thursday. Please bring in the book to return and swap for a new one.

Homework is continued to be sent out on Fridays and due in the following Thursday. Homework quiz to follow on the Friday morning.

Year 2's homework club will continue on Friday afternoons and is open to all to complete the homework in school instead of during home time.

Spring 1 Home learning ideas

The children had a great time meeting Father Christmas at the Christmas Party.

Homework message: The National Curriculum states children are to recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables. We will also look at, from this half term on wards, counting on in 3's and possibly the 4 multiplication table as we proceed. Thank you for your continued support. Miss Butler.

It's the end of the road...

It's the end of the road... 1 The children built some landmarks around Adlington

Welcome to Year 2 Class Page

Autumn 2nd Half term:

This half term the children are learning all about their local area. We will be visiting the local community for a walk through history. We want to find out how long it has been since it was built, what kind of events happened in the community centre?, and really how much has it changed?

If you visit our classroom for more of an insight, our topic wall will be showing all kinds of work and findings we come across through the half term. Our homework will also link in with activities of our topic and also consolidation of what we are learning in class.

Later in the half term (Nov.Dec) be busy practising for our nativity performance.

Autumn 1st Half term:

Our topic is Towers, Tunnels and Turrets.

'See the castle ahead? get ready to invade it's mighty walls! Shoot a projectile with an archer's aim! Head across the drawbridge, over the moat and up to the top to the tower...

Meet Rapunzel who lives in a tall, tall tower. Let's build a brand new one... Whose is the tallest? Can you measure it?

Then dig deep, deep down, making burrows and tunnels, just like the animals who live underground.

And finally... meet three little pigs who need your help to build a strong fortress. Inside its strong walls they'll be safe from the big, bad wolf! No huffing and puffing will blow your fortress down.

Literacy: Children will be introduced to a new phonic scheme this half term called Read Write Inc. This will be taught every day for 30 minutes along with spelling the words with the sounds learnt that session. Our story focused on this half term is 'The Tunnel' by Anthony Browne. They will look into using descriptive writing using the images from the story. They will also be creating their own ending to the story, using a story map to help them speak a loud their sentences and structure the story.
