Learning Together Following Jesus

Christian values are the heartbeat of our school. Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. At Adlington St Paul’s we intend to deliver an exciting, innovative, high-quality Music curriculum. This will engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and increase self-confidence, creativity, and sense of achievement.

Intent

Our intent is to:

  • Build a music curriculum that is progressive and builds on previous learning
  • Promote a love of music and singing across a broad curriculum
  • Teach music in a thematic and enjoyable way, alongside other areas of the curriculum
  • Teach the music curriculum in an experiential, practical way
  • Encourage children to participate in opportunities to demonstrate a love of music and to showcase their skills

Implementation

At times, music lessons are linked to Topic work and music is used in a variety of lessons and activities to create, mood, atmosphere and to help thinking. Through the musical program Charanga, teachers can produce inclusive lessons for all children to access the musical curriculum in a fun and engaging way, further promoting a love of learning. Teachers deliver music following the Charanga programme, designed specifically for the teaching of music in primary schools. Charanga lessons are planned in sequences to provide children with the opportunities to review, remember, deepen, and apply their understanding.

  • Planned opportunities for home learning tasks to consolidate and extend knowledge and skills
  • A scheme of work that focuses on progressive skills and knowledge in performing, understanding, and appreciating music
  • Planned opportunities to learn music within a wider context alongside other curriculum subjects
  • Participation in local music festivals, Young Voices and school productions and choir events
  • A love of music performing and appreciating music encouraged and promoted
  • Extra-curricular opportunities to participate in music. (Choir and Young Voices)

 

Impact

Music enables children to develop an understanding of culture and history, both in relation to children individually, as well as ethnicities from across the world. Children are able to enjoy music in as many ways as they choose – either as listener, creator or performer. Children have the opportunity to discuss and share their own thoughts, opinions and ideas, acknowledging and respecting that these may vary and that this is positive. They can dissect music and comprehend its parts. They can sing and feel a pulse.

 

  • Children will understand and apply subject specific vocabulary
