Flower Stem Function

Lesson: Science

Class: Year 3 Year: 2023 - 2024

Over teh past 2 weeks we have investigated the important function of the stem of a plant. We have used celery to show us the fuction. We used food colouring in one glass and just water in another, using teh same amount, making it a fair test. We then added similar sized celery with leaves to each glass. We have the observed over time the changes in the celery. In just one hour the celery turned orange/brown. Over the duration of a week we have seen the celery turn very red and the celery with just water tuen very green and healthy!

We have found out the stem transports the water to the leaves, through the xylem, taing food a nutrients to leaves and flower. The leaves transpire the water, leaving a puddle, this would usually land in the soil and the process start again.

We have really enjoyed watching the process.
