What keeps us dry?

Lesson: Science

Class: Year 1 Year: 2022 - 2023

Today we investigated 'what keeps us dry?' First we grouped our coats in different ways - colours, materials and properties making a real life venn diagram. We then looked at a variety of materials that might keep us dry - plastic, nylon, newspaper, foil, fleece and cottton, talking about their properties. We then made predictions for each, decideing if they would keep us dry. Next, the fun part - testing the materials! We used a water spary to test the materials! We found out that nylon, plastic and foil are all waterproof which means they will keep us dry. Newspaper, cotton and fleece all absorbed the water so did not keep us dry. We talked about why foil is not made into coats to keep us dry and why polyester (plastic) and nylon are.
