Mr Findlow
Mrs Sanderson
Welcome to Year 6.
This term our topic is 'Maafa'.
This project teaches children about Africa past and present, with a particular focus on Benin. It traces the development of the slave trade and explores Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, the causes and consequences of the European colonisation of Africa and the worldwide communities that make up the African diaspora.
We will also be learning about:
Science: Living Things and their Habitats - This project teaches children about how living things are classified into broad groups according to common observable characteristics and based on similarities and differences, including micro-organisms, plants and animals.
RE: Life as a Journey - Children will explore the question: 'Is everyone's journey the same?'. They will also discover why people of faith make pilgrimages.
Art: Trail Blazers, Barrier Breakers- This project teaches children about significant black artists and their work, and provides opportunities to analyse and create artwork inspired by them.
Design Technology: Food for Life - This project teaches children about processed food and healthy food choices. They make bread and pasta sauces and learn about the benefits of whole foods. They plan and make meals as part of a healthy daily menu, and evaluate their completed products.
PSHE: Me and My Relationships - This unit will help children to resolve friendship issues, negotiate and to be assertive.
PE: Swimming and Teamwork Actrivities
Music: Children will compose and perform simple melodies in the unit 'Happy'

Pick and Mix
Your child will bring home their Pick and Mix linked to their topic. Pick and Mix projects are suggested activities that help to inspire children beyond the classroom. Each activity provides an opportunity for children to explore their topic further using a number of different skills. When children have finished a project, they can bring this into school where each class will have a designated time to celebrate the learning that has taken place. Projects can stay in school and be displayed on each class’s working wall or can be taken home.
If you have any questions about how to further support your child's learning at home, please contact your child's class teacher via Class Dojo or the school office.
