Learning Together Following Jesus

Christian values are the heartbeat of our school. Seeking to be respectful, responsible and empowering global citizens, we follow the words of St Paul, ‘Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart’. In this context, rejoicing in Jesus’ love and compassion for all, we pursue excellence as we celebrate everyone’s uniqueness in a broad, rich and balanced curriculum.

Intent

Our PSHE curriculum aims to motivate and inspire children through a curriculum that engages and challenges all learners.

PSHE enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community. It aims to meet the pupils’ needs, preparing them for the challenges and opportunities of adult life.

Implementation

At St Paul’s, we implement an inclusive curriculum that meets the requirements of the National Curriculum.

We follow guidance from CORAM Life Education and the SCARF scheme of work which encourage a values-based and 'Growth Mindset' approach while promoting positive behaviour, mental health, wellbeing, resilience and achievement as part of our curriculum. We also enrich the teaching of our curriculum through the use of NCPCC resources and HHKids lessons and parent sessions.

The delivered curriculum (scheme of work) reflects the needs of our pupils and is tailored to meet specific needs. We expect teachers to use the PSHE programme to equip pupils with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions. All staff are excellent role models and have high expectations for all pupils.

The curriculum is split into three core themes of: 

Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World.

The children will meet these themes throughout the course of the year through the six main units of:

• Me and my relationships
• Valuing difference
• Keeping myself safe
• Rights and responsibilities
• Being my best
• Growing and Changing 

The children's knowledge and understanding in each of these areas are built upon as the children move through school.

Children at St. Paul’s express their learning in a variety of ways; discussion and debate, art, poetry, drama and meditation help our children to access PSHE. Children at St. Paul’s record their learning in a variety of ways; floor books, individual folders and wall displays are used to capture the children’s thoughts, ideas and responses.

At St Paul’s we believe that PSHE plays a vital part of primary education and needs to be taught at least weekly; although there will also be opportunity to make cross curricular links and these opportunities should not be missed. This enables staff to ensure full coverage of the PSHE scheme of work. There are always occasions where staff may feel it necessary to teach PSHE as a result of an issue which has arisen in their own class.

PSHE is an important part of school assemblies and collective worship were children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured.

Children learn to recognise their own self-worth, working well with others and they become increasingly responsible for their own learning. In doing so, they reflect on their own experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up as they develop into responsible citizens.

Fundamental British Values are actively promoted in PSHE lessons in order to prepare the children for life in Modern Britain.

Impact

Our well- planned PSHE curriculum ensures that children develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage many of the critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face as they grow up and in adulthood.

Through the breadth and depth that our curriculum offers, children can stay safe and healthy, develop their self-esteem, resilience and empathy, whilst tackling barriers to learning, raising aspirations, and improving their life chances.
