Learning Together Following Jesus

Christian values are the heartbeat of our school. Seeking to be respectful, responsible and empowering global citizens, we follow the words of St Paul, ‘Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart’. In this context, rejoicing in Jesus’ love and compassion for all, we pursue excellence as we celebrate everyone’s uniqueness in a broad, rich and balanced curriculum.

Intent:

Our St. Paul’s Art curriculum aims to enable all learners to flourish their creativity, curiosity and Imagination. Our focus is to provide children with the confidence to be inspired by wonderful artworks, which stimulates a passion for children to experiment and invent their own style of art, craft,or design. Our Art curriculum allows children to explore various cultural and historical influences attached to significant artworks and artists. Throughout the school, we aim to provide a range of opportunities for children to enhance their artistic skills and knowledge.

St. Paul’s children will experience:

  • Sculpture
  • Printing
  • Painting
  • Colour exploration
  • Sketching
  • Collage
  • Textiles
  • and much more!

Implementation:

At St. Paul’s the teaching and implementation of our Art curriculum is based upon the National Curriculum and is delivered by the Cornerstones Curriculum. The scheme of work ensures artistic skills and knowledge are developed and sequence thoroughly from Reception to Year 6.  From understanding the basics of colour theory and mixing skills to producing realistic hand painted landscapes. The structure of the curriculum provides children with the opportunity to apply, refine and revisit previous learnt skills and knowledge. All our termly topics are based upon the four stages of pedagogy; Engage, Develop, Innovate and Express. This ensures Art is taught in a consistent and harmonious fashion alongside our other curriculum subjects, presenting children with diverse creative and interconnective experiences. For example, in Year 6 the project Inuit Art is taught alongside the Geography project, Frozen Kingdom and enriches children’s geographical and cultural knowledge. Furthermore, the chart below, from our Cornerstones Curriculum, shows how children’s use of pencil, ink, charcoal and pen progresses over time to enable children to know and do more in this aspect of art and design.

Children at St. Paul’s have their own sketchbooks where they record their art throughout the year.

Impact:

The access to children receiving a high-quality Art Curriculum contributes to children’s personal and social development on creativity, independence, judgement, and self-reflection.  Our children are encouraged to develop a sense of ownership over their work and reflect on their learning journey through our four-stage pedagogy and evaluate their progress and development.

Children at St Paul’s can:

  • Talk confidently about their development of artistic knowledge and skills.
  • Be inspired by a range of artists and experiences in Art and Design
  • Use their creativity to express themselves through a range of media.
  • Take pride in their progression displayed within their sketchbooks.
