Finding pattern in pitch

Lesson: Science

Class: Year 4 Year: 2022 - 2023

Today we have investigated changes in pitch. We used 5 glass bottles of water to hear the pitch change, depending on how much liquid there was in the bottle and the vibrations made. We predicted and tested, and found the longer the column of air the lower the pitch, the shorter the column of air the higher the pitch. Most of us thought it would be the opposite way around as we thought more vibrations would cause a higher pitch with more space. We then used a ukulele to test the pitch depending on where you hold the string on the instrument. We found the shorter the string the higher the pitch, the longer the string the lower the pitch.
