Levers and Pulleys

Lesson: Science

Class: Year 5 Year: 2022 - 2023

Over the past couple of Science lessons we have been learning about levers and pulleys and what their function is. We have been using our mathematical skills in order to calculate the effort needed to push on a lever to balance it or in order to pull a weight up using a pulley. The calculation method we have used is load / meters = effort. The less effort needed the greater the mechanical advantage. We have found the closer the fulcrum on the lever is to the load the less effort is needed and the more pulleys taking the load with more rope, the less effort is needed to pull the weight.

please note / means divided in the calculation.
